Grand Canyon national Park
One of the seven natural wonders of the
world, the Grand Canyon in northern
Arizona is powerful and inspiring. At a
mile deep, up to 18 miles wide and with
277 miles of river meandering along the
canyon bottom, the Grand Canyon is
truly one of America’s natural treasures.
Experience the park by way of the
South Rim and Desert View, or the North
Rim. At the tourist-friendly South Rim,
visitors can sign up for free ranger programs
or visit the visitor center. This is also the
starting point to a number of scenic hikes
and drives, including the Scenic Hermit
Road, which offers some of the best views
of the canyon, and the Scenic Desert View
Drive, which takes you to Desert View
Point. Here, you can climb to the top of the
70-foot-tall stone Watchtower, where you
can see a panoramic view of the canyon that
can reach as far as 100 miles on a clear day.
The more remote North Rim has
a visitor center, where you can find
interpretive exhibits and sign up for
free interpretive ranger programs.
For a thrilling end to your Grand
Canyon adventure, be sure to arrange a
rafting trip along the Colorado River. For
the more adventurous, whitewater trips are
available, lasting from 3 to 21 days. Half-
day smoothwater trips from Glen Canyon
Dam to Lees Ferry are also available.
yosemite national Park
One of the first wilderness parks in the
United States, Yosemite National Park
covers nearly 1,200 square miles of
mountainous terrain in the Sierra Nevada
of California. Filled with deep valleys,
grand meadows, cascading waterfalls,
ancient giant sequoias and a vast wilderness
area, Yosemite is nature at its best.
Get lost in a sea of towering trees
at Mariposa Grove, home to the largest
stand of giant sequoias, also known
as Sierra redwoods or big trees, some
of which are as old as 3,000 years.
Another must-see is Yosemite Falls,
a 2,425-foot waterfall that is actually
made up of three separate falls. For
experienced hikers, an all-day hike to
the top of Yosemite Falls is available.
The park is also known for its
spectacular rock formations. Rising nearly
5,000 feet from the valley floor, Half
Dome is perhaps the most recognized
symbol of Yosemite, while El Capitan
is a favorite for experienced rock
climbers. At 3,000 feet, it is the largest
monolith of granite in the world.
