diagnosis. The nonprofit organization provides financial support
to moms during their post surgery and recovery from cancer.
“During my treatment, everyday I’d almost always speak to
someone who had it worse off than me. I saw what those moms
had to endure and it was enough for me to say I was going to do
something about it,” Lauren says.
The organization’s mission
is to provide support services
to mothers diagnosed with
cancer, living with at least one
dependent child. With funds
raised through the organization’s
many fundraising efforts, grants
are given to cover such things as rent, utility bills, gas, groceries and
children’s school supplies.
“When we initially started HEAL, I thought the most we’d
be helping out with would be things like light housekeeping. The
need was far greater than we ever imagined,” Lauren says. “Here’s
a mom, a single mom with three kids, who’s going through chemo
and she’s getting a disconnect notice. We found that these women
needed the basic things to survive.”
When Lauren started HEAL in 2004, she knew she ultimately
wanted to create a safe place and caring environment for women
and their families.Three years later, that dream became a reality.
In 2007, the HEALing House opened its doors. Mothers
recovering from cancer now had a place where they could go to
get support from women just like them. The home is a haven of
sorts, providing moms with not only a place to socialize and attend
educational classes, but also somewhere their children can play and
participate in family-friendly events.
A year later, the HEALing House opened
its food pantry, a result of the overwhelming
number of requests for grocery money from
grant recipients. Thanks to donations from the
community, the pantry provides non-perishable
food items to families facing financial
challenges, especially in today’s economy.
“The irony is that many women won’t be able to benefit from
the food pantry because they can’t afford the gas to get to us,”
Lauren says. It’s a vicious cycle. Some of our families are already
struggling enough.”
Since starting HEAL, Lauren, her staff and volunteers have
made great strides in creating awareness about the group and
extending its reach to help even more women recovering from
cancer, much like she did nearly 10 years ago.
“I realize now why I got diagnosed at such a young age.
It brought me to my life’s work. I’m grateful for my diagnosis,”
she says.
