Five Insurance Policies Families Should Have

There are a few basic insurance policies you need to protect your family from unforeseen events that can cause financial catastrophe. Talk to your trusted insurance advisor to make sure you have your bases covered. Rebecca Niessink of Allstate Agency recommends these five insurance policies for every family.

Health. A good medical plan will ensure you and your family have the coverage needed for any unplanned health issues, as well as preventative and wellness visits. Health care costs are rising, and you don’t want to be the one paying the huge bills that would come along with a major illness or injury.

Life. If anyone depends on you financially, or if you want to make sure your final expenses don’t burden anyone, you need life insurance. Whether you bring home a paycheck, or you provide for your family in other ways, there will be support needed to keep your family going through a very tough time. Losing a loved one is a family tragedy – don’t let it become a financial tragedy, as well.

Auto. Everyone who drives should have a reputable company protecting them behind the wheel. The property damage and medical bills that result from a serious accident can be devastating. You don’t want to find yourself underinsured. Talk to your trusted insurance agent and make sure you have the level of protection you need to protect your assets.

Property. Whether you own or rent, you have personal property that would need to be replaced should a fire, theft, weather, or water loss occur. Most policies pay to replace your home and belongings after submitting a claim. Take photos in your home of each room and of your valuable items. You may think you don’t have much to cover, but you have more than you think and it adds up quickly.

Umbrella liability. We work hard to create a lifestyle and future for ourselves and our families, and one mistake could wipe that all out. If a claim is made against you involving dog attacks, auto accidents and motorcycle fatalities, you can be found negligent. When attorneys get involved, they look to your savings and future income earnings to pay the lawsuit. Always have more liability coverage than you have in total assets. If an accident occurs and you’re responsible, wouldn’t you rather have your insurance company write that check?
