“The Wind family tradition of cheese
fondue after a long day of skiing
has been passed down through the
generations. When our family built
a chalet in Vermont in the 1960s,
this traditional Swiss meal was the
perfect way to celebrate family time
together. Today, we carry on these
traditions with our children, stepping
back in time to enjoy cheese fondue
in the traditional communal pot, while
unplugging from all electronics.”

Poland
“I grew up in Krakow, Poland, and
recently took my son and husband to
the city I spent my childhood. It was a
special experience. From walking the
streets in the Old Town, to climbing
to the top of the surrounding hills for
a bird’s-eye view, experiencing the
country’s culture and history made
for very special memories.”

In the Jewish culture, family is
considered the center of achievement
in a person’s life. Tradition is a big
part of close family relationships
and children are encouraged to help
each other. In addition, Hasidic Jews
believe in having large families. The
average Hasidic family in the United
States has 7.9 children.

“Sunday is a family day in Haiti.
Families dress up and go to church.
It’s the very simple things here...
cooking, laundry, sewing, dominoes,
cleaning, mealtime, etc. Families that
can’t afford to send their children to
school often set up small stores and
work together to make money to buy
food for dinner.”

In the Philippines, children are
encouraged to learn traditional folk
dances, which are often performed
at family events, such as weddings,
reunions and birthday parties. These
traditional dances are a celebration of
the family, which is the building block
of Filipino culture.

For the Bedouin, an Arab ethnic
tribe, the family is the basis for
domestic life. Strong family ties
and taking responsibility for ones
relatives is expected. Bedouin women
are excellent at making detailed
beadwork necklaces and bracelets,
which are sold by their children in
and around the town.
