In the Kitchen
THE THUMB
T
he Thumb is an award-winning
barbecue bistro and car
wash that features a retail
area, coffee bar and bakery.
One-stop shopping at its finest,
customers can get their cars washed
and grab lunch or a bakery item
while they wait.
The concept began with the
vision of Thumb owner James
“Kipp” Lassetter. Every day, he’d
pass a vacant gas station on Bell
Road in Scottsdale. Then one day,
the idea came to him: To serve
world-class barbecue in a gas
station with a full-service car wash
to boot.

Everyone thought he was
crazy. “It’ll never work,” they’d
say. Or, “Great idea, but not in
Scottsdale.”
When Scottsdale’s gourmet
gas station was featured on
the Food Network’s “Diners,
Drive-Ins and Dives,” Guy Fieri
called The Thumb “the funky
gas station/BBQ cafe dishin’ out da
bomb brisket!” And when Wayde
King and Brett Raymer from Animal
Planet’s “Tanked” visited to install
the store’s 750-gallon saltwater
aquarium, they couldn’t get
enough of the Brisket Stack,
claiming the barbecue was
“second to none!”
