THE NEW DRUG: SYNTHETIC MARIJUANA
They go by the names Spice, K2 and Genie. Seemingly
vague, yet certainly enticing, these words could mean just
about anything. The truth is, these monikers are actual ly
brands of synthetic marijuana, an herbal and chemical
product that mimics the ef fects of cannabis.
Synthetic marijuana has become very popular with
teenagers, mainly due to the fact that it’s easy to get. Sold
under the guise of incense, Spice is avai lable onl ine or at
your local smoke shop. The ease with which teens can obtain
these potential ly harmful products is unnerving.
Available in flavors like blueberry and strawberry, teens
are ingesting Spice by smoking it and even drinking it as tea.
As for the effects, there are reports of people experiencing
rapid heart rates and a spike in blood pressure. The drug can
be exponentially more powerful than marijuana and is said to
produce a more intense high for a shorter period of time. The side
effects, however, are more disturbing and can include seizures,
hallucinations, tremors, blackouts or even cardiac arrest.
The synthetic trend is crossing over to other drugs,
including speed and heroin. But it’s a synthetic form of cocaine
that really has parents concerned. Labeled as “bath salts” or
“plant feeder,” this new drug is being snorted by teens looking
for a quick, euphoric and dangerous high. Like spice and
K2, synthetic cocaine is marketed under unassuming names
such as Ivory Coast, Cloud 9 and White Lightning, and can be
purchased online and at smoke shops.

‘THE LAST TEXT’
In an effort to address the growing problem of texting and
driving, particularly among teens, AT&T has produced an
11-minute documentary on the timely and important topic.
Entit led “The Last Text,” the short f i lm features stories
about people whose l ives were adversely af fected by texting
behind the wheel, including the parents of Mariah West, who
died af ter texting “Where u at?” to a friend.
Geared for teens age 15 and older, AT&T is distributing the
film to schools, safety organizations and government agencies and
on its YouTube channel. The doc is part of the company’s multi-
platform “It Can Wait” campaign, which launched last March and
includes a Facebook app where friends can take a pledge not to
text and drive. For information, visit itcanwait.att.com.
