Familiarize yourself with the best time your child is readily open to talk. Is it right before bedtime? While they’re doing an activity?
Ask others how well they think you communicate.
As parents, we sometimes need to learn better skills.
Make the time.
Give your child the opportunity to set up a time to talk with you. Say, “I would like to carve out some time to talk with you. Would you like to talk before dinner or after?”
Giving them an opportunity to engage will help with the process.
Use the maskmatters app. It features MASK videos which can be watched with your child to help start a conversation.
Most importantly, provide an environment that is safe for your child, even when they make mistakes. Use mistakes as opportunities to teach.
